Special Education

Special Education is education designed to meet the unique academic, emotional and social needs of students with disabilities. It guarantees an appropriately developed Individual Education Program (IEP) providing access to the general educational curriculum as determined by grade level and state standards or access to specialized instruction and related services which allow the child an opportunity for educational benefit.

Ideally, Special Education is the partnership of well trained classroom professionals; a supportive and insightful IEP team of parents, educators and other professionals; a culture of respect for persons of differing ability as demonstrated by the law; and, a school system willing to support the decisions made by this team on behalf of an individual student. Special Education is providing the appropriate, necessary and rightful supports to ensure that a student with disabilities can succeed in our schools and in our world.
